CUSD Board Says Goodbye to Kathleen Kaiser – Chico Enterprise-Record

CHICO — Chico Unified School District School Board President Kathleen Kaiser lived through her last school board meeting on Wednesday.

After 16 years of service on the board, Kaiser chose not to run for re-election. Her family and fellow board members honored her at the reunion with gifts and eulogies. Kaiser smiled humbly as his colleagues and family paid their respects.

“We will miss you very much,” Superintendent Kelly Staley said. “After 16 years and several challenges, you have led us through many achievements with growth in registrations, successes (professional and technical) and a new stadium. You are an integral part of the Chico Unified story.

Board member Caitlin Dalby choked up while reading a tribute to Kaiser.

“I’ve known Kathy since she became a teacher and got involved in board meetings. Until you work with her, you don’t know how hard she works,” Dalby said.

Kaiser received several gifts on Wednesday.

“We express our gratitude and appreciation to Kathleen and send her our best wishes for happiness in the years to come,” Staley said.

Kaiser appreciated all the gifts and well wishes.

“Thank you all and thank you all,” Kaiser said. “I thank Cheryl, who is my partner, and my family.”

Rebecca Konkin, elected board member, attended the meeting. Konkin will join the board at the next meeting on December 14.

Staley announced that Konkin will take over at the next meeting.

“I will be honored to serve on the board,” Konkin said from his seat in the audience.

Council also heard an update on the Information Facilities Master Plan. The facilities master plan was developed in 2014 after Measure E was passed. In 2014, the board approved a final version of the plan. The plan provides an assessment from time to time of enrollment projections, educational program changes, project cost estimates, and implementation phases. The plan was updated in 2016 and again in 2019. The board approved the development of a new update on Sept. 7, according to the Chico Unified School District School Board Agenda. Julia Kistle, who works in facilities and construction, provided an update on the facilities master plan.

There was recent vandalism at a school with several break-ins in which catalytic converters were stolen and there were other break-ins into vehicles. The council voted 5-0 to approve new barbed wire garden fencing that cannot be cut with tools. The fence can be climbed, but not cut.

The board voted 5-0 to approve a grant from the California Energy Commission through the California School Healthy Air, Plumbing, and Efficiency Ventilation Program to test and evaluate the district’s heating, cooling, and ventilation systems at 20 sites. schools, according to the agenda of the council.

The Board heard a presentation from the Chief Technology Officer, John Vincent, on the Internet Usage Policy. While at school, children cannot see naked images or violent images. Council members Matt Tennis and Eileen Robinson asked about how internet security works. Vincent said artificial intelligence is used for certain words and phrases that appear in searches and are flagged, such as nudity or images of weapons.

The council voted 5-0 to monitor the online activities of minors and provide minors with information about appropriate online behavior, which includes interacting with others on social media and in chat rooms, as well as cyberbullying awareness and response.

Tennis pointed out that while the internet is useful for so many things, it takes time when students are surfing the web instead of focusing on their studies.

“It’s a useful tool, but it makes students waste time,” Tennis said.

At the next meeting, the officers for the 2023 school year will be sworn in. The council will appoint and elect new council officers at this meeting. After this meeting, the board meetings for 2023 will be posted on the Chico Unified School District website.

The next regular school board meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14 in the Marigold Elementary School Multipurpose Room located at 2446 Marigold Ave.
